How to Create a Room Plan

Step 1

Start with a Template

SmartDraw has templates for all kinds of rooms. You can choose from Bedroom Floor Plan, Living Room Layout, Bathroom Layout, or just choose a generic Residential Floor Plan.

Step 2

Take Measurements

Measure the walls, doors, windows, and your existing furniture and fixtures in a room so that the floor plan will be accurate.

Step 3

Drag and Drop a Room Outline

Drag and drop a room outline that most closely match the space you're trying to illustrate from the library docked to the left of your drawing area. You can always adjust it later.

Step 4

Adjust Your Room Outline as Needed

You can easily change the length of any wall in your outline by simply typing in the desired length of the wall in the dimension label. You can also use your mouse to adjust a wall either vertically or horizontally using the grow handles.

Step 5

Draw Walls

If you need to add more walls, choose the Add Wall tool in the upper left part of the SmartPanel to the left of your drawing area. Click once in your work area to begin drawing a wall segment, drag your mouse, and click again to complete your wall segment.

Step 6

Drag and Drop Symbols

Drag and drop the doors and windows. Add furniture like beds, desks, chairs and so on. To rearrange furniture, just drag them around your space with your mouse or use the arrow keys on your keyboard for more precise adjustments. Resize items by typing in the exact dimensions into the dimension labels of the objects.

Step 7

Add Realistic Textures and Colors

Enhance your room design by adding realistic textures and colors. Select a symbol and choose a color or texture in the Fill menu. To add flooring, select your entire room outline and choose from various realistic wood flooring and carpet options.

Step 8

Print or Share Your Floor Plan

Invite clients or team members to give you feedback and work on your room plan in real-time. Once your room plan is complete, you can add it directly to any Microsoft Office app like Microsoft Word® or PowerPoint®, or add it to Google Docs or Google Slides.

You can also easily export your room plan as a PDF ready for printing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Room Planners

Can I use AI to decorate a room?

AI tools and LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude are great for generating designs in the early stages of planning for inspiration. However, the images they produce are not editable and not to scale. We recommend using LLMs alongside a tool like SmartDraw's room planner. This gives you the best of both worlds. You can translate a text prompt into an inspirational image and use SmartDraw to create a precise scaled drawing.

What is the 3-5-7 rule for decorating?

Group objects in odd numbers like 3, 5, and 7 to create a visually balanced arrangement of items.

What is the 80/20 rule in decorating?

This is the Pareto Principle of design that suggests using a dominant style for 80% of your room to create cohesion and use 20% to create contrast and give your room design a unique personality.

Can I change scale on a room plan?

With SmartDraw, you can change the scale of any drawing at any time. You can flip between standard and metric scales at will. You can also define your own scale if it is not among the standard scales offered.

What is the 60/40 rule of interior design?

This is the golden ratio of design. Fill 60% of your room with furniture and leave 40% empty to let your design breathe and reduce clutter and overcrowding.

Can I import images?

You can easily import photos to create texture or add more detail to any design. You can even import an image of an existing floor plan if you want to draw over it in more detail or make notes to share with your team.
